Geographical indications protect the names of products which possess qualities, reputation or other characteristics attributable to their geographical origin.
The purpose of geographical indications is to recognize and protect the unique quality and tradition associated with products from specific geographical areas. Geographical indications also protect agricultural products, food, and wine, with well-known examples being champagne or Danish Lammefjord potatoes.
It will be possible to apply for geographical indications for craft and industrial products from 1 December 2025. Therefore, the Danish Patent and Trademark Office is already working on the administrative elements of the system.
